October 19: Having taken refuge in the Divine Refuge within

From James Allen's “James Allen’s Book of Meditations for Every Day in the Year” (1913), in gently modernised English. Read it, then carry the thought with you today.

Text of the meditation

Having taken refuge in the Divine Refuge within, and remaining there, a person is free from sin. No doubt will shake their trust, and no uncertainty will rob them of rest. People love their desires, because gratification seems sweet to them, but its end is pain and emptiness.

They love the arguments of the intellect, because ego seems most desirable to them, but its fruits are humiliation and sorrow. When the soul has reached the end of gratification and tasted the bitter fruits of ego, it is ready to receive Divine Wisdom and to enter the Divine Life.

Only the crucified can be transfigured. Only through the death of self can the Lord of the heart rise again into Immortal Life, and stand radiant on the Mount of Olives of Wisdom. Where self is not, there is the Garden of the Heavenly Life.
